SLMHC Board of Directors appoints Heather Lee as President and CEO

SIOUX LOOKOUT, ON — The Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Mrs. Heather Lee as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre. The Board had previously appointed Mrs. Lee as acting CEO while they conducted the search for a permanent appointee. Since 2013, Mrs. Lee had been Vice President of Health Services and Chief Nursing Executive and had earned the respect and confidence of her colleagues, staff, and the Board through her leadership.

“On behalf of the SLMHC Board of Directors, we would like to welcome Heather to her appointment as President and CEO of SLMHC. With over 30 years combined experience as a Registered Nurse and Health Care Executive, including twelve years working in areas which serve First Nations communities, Heather brings a strong understanding of the challenges and opportunities which exist in advocating for high-quality health care that is both equitable and culturally appropriate. We are confident that with Heather’s experience, leadership approach and passion for health care, the organization will advance to meet the growing needs of the people we serve.” Barbara Hancock and Solomon Mamakwa, co-chairs SLMHC Board of Directors.

In November 2016, the Board of Directors formed a committee to search for a new President and CEO. One of the priorities of the search committee was to consult with Board members and health delivery partners to establish a list of competencies that would guide the search and decision-making.

The Board was looking for a candidate who possessed a great wealth of competence.  Some key competencies include a sound knowledge of Ontario’s health care system, having a strong understanding of the complexities that can arise for First Nation health care patients and communities and the proven ability to navigate the mosaic of intergovernmental systems applicable to health care for all residents in the Sioux Lookout catchment area.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve SLMHC, our patients, and the communities that rely on us to provide high quality health care to the area. There are continuous improvements happening across the health system and our organization is fortunate to have exceptional management staff, professional and support staff, and physicians who are dedicated to improving patient experiences.  In the days ahead, I look forward to building and fostering relationships with the people we serve, our staff and physicians, community leaders, and the many partners who are an important part of our journey to Excellence Every Time.” Heather Lee, President and CEO.
