Miichim
Traditional Foods
Traditional food (Miichim) is still an important part of the daily lives of many Anishinaabe people and is an important link between health, culture and identity. Traditional food can help to create a healing, comfortable and a familiar environment for patients during their stay at the hospital.
Traditional foods are offered to all our patients twice a week and are prepared in such a way to ensure each meal fits in with the majority of our nutritional diets. We also offer a selection of premade frozen Miichim meals for patients who are interested in keeping with their Traditional diets on a daily basis.
All traditional food and wild game donated by local hunters, gatherers, and outfitters. These donations include such food as moose, caribou, beaver, small game, walleye, trout, geese, ducks, other waterfowl, local blueberries, and wild rice.
We have worked diligently to acquire the necessary legislative exemptions in order to serve uninspected meats to our patients. We want to ensure a steady flow of donations in order to continue providing the Miichim to our patients and clients.
The Traditional Program is always seeking donations of wild game or other items. If you are interested in donating to our program or would like more information, please call the Traditional Programs Department at 807-737-6561 or 807-737-6562.
