Indigenous-Focused BPSO

Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre is participating in the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario’s Indigenous-Focused Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) initiative.

The Indigenous-Focused BPSO initiative supports the implementation and sustainability of evidence-based best practice guidelines while recognizing the importance of Indigenous knowledge, cultural safety, relationship-building, and community engagement.

Through this work, SLMHC is committed to strengthening the quality and consistency of care provided to patients, families, and communities. The initiative brings together leadership, staff, physicians, Indigenous Services, patients, families, and community partners to support meaningful and sustainable improvements in care and clinical practice.

Our Areas of Focus

SLMHC’s Indigenous-Focused BPSO work includes:

  • Implementing and sustaining selected RNAO Best Practice Guidelines
  • Advancing culturally safe, respectful, and person- and family-centered care
  • Integrating Indigenous perspectives, knowledge, and priorities into implementation activities
  • Engaging patients, families, Indigenous leadership, and community partners
  • Building staff knowledge and supporting the development of BPSO Champions
  • Monitoring implementation, outcomes, and opportunities for continuous improvement
  • Strengthening collaboration across departments and with external health partners

Current Priorities

  • Person and Family-Centered Care
  • Transitions in Care and Services

These priorities will guide implementation activities, staff engagement, education, evaluation, and collaboration with patients, families, communities, and health-system partners.

The priorities will be reviewed annually through the Indigenous-Focused BPSO Steering Committee.
