At Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre (SLMHC), volunteers are valued members of our community who give their time and talents to support others and help make a difference.
Volunteering at SLMHC is a rewarding opportunity to connect with others, develop new skills, share your abilities, and provide comfort and support to our patients and residents. This valuable experience can also provide opportunities for personal growth and future employment.
Our volunteers are dedicated individuals who participate in meaningful activities that reflect their interests, skills, and abilities while contributing to the care and experience of our patients, residents, families, and community.
At SLMHC, our volunteers:
- Are 14 years of age or older
- Have a genuine interest in helping others
- Accept and follow hospital policies and procedures
- Seek opportunities to learn and grow
- Are responsible, dependable, and caring
- Are physically able to perform the tasks they commit to
- Have successfully completed required screening and training
There Are Many Ways YOU Can Contribute to SLMHC and Your Community
Direct Patient / Resident Support
- Patient navigation and wayfinding support
- Visiting and providing companionship
- Reading, writing letters, playing cards, or participating in games
- Assisting with walks, music, pet, or exercise therapy programs
- Supporting pastoral or palliative care programs
- Baking and supporting traditional or cultural food programs
- Assisting with activity carts and recreational programs
- Supporting the Goodnight Program
Indirect Patient / Resident Support
- Watering plants and gardening
- Hospital grounds clean-up and beautification projects
- Decorating hospital spaces
- Knitting or other creative projects
- Assisting with different SLMHC events (ie. Yard Sales at ECU, Anishinaabe Giizhigan Celebrations)
High School Student Volunteer Opportunities
If you are a high school student interested in volunteering at SLMHC to fulfill your 40-hour graduation requirement, opportunities may include:
- Patient navigation assistance
- Hospital grounds clean-up
- Collecting trays
- Assisting with activation programs (Ie. Bingo, arts and craft activities, etc..)
We will work with you to match your skills, interests, and talents with meaningful volunteer opportunities that support our patients, residents, and community. Volunteers are needed throughout the week at various times and locations.

Application Process
Our volunteer application process includes:
- A brief informal interview
- Criminal record check with the vulnerable sector (no cost to volunteer) to support the safety and well-being of our patients, residents, families, and staff.
- Immunization Record
