Abdullah Hamo, Ultrasound Technologist, has been part of Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre (SLMHC) team for five years.

Abdullah says good communication and comradery in the Diagnostic Imaging Department makes for an enjoyable daily environment where he provides various ultrasound services.

“We have a great team here in Diagnostic Imaging. Everyone communicates really well, and the department is run well. It makes me happy to be able to come in every day and work with this team to provide services for our patients,” he says.

Originally from Syria, Abdullah’s journey has led him to multiple countries, where he’s learned over four languages, before ultimately calling Sioux Lookout home. He enjoys the friendliness of Sioux Lookout and the opportunities he’s had locally to learn about Indigenous culture and language.

“I studied medicine in Russia and returned to Syria after my studies. Because of the war in the middle east I moved to Turkey. After that, I applied for immigration to Canada and I came to Quebec. I was in Montreal before moving to Sioux Lookout… I really like it here. It’s a quiet town, and the community is very friendly,” he explains. “When I moved here, I started to learn about First Nations culture and their language. It was new for me, but it’s been a great opportunity to be here learning in this hospital and with this team.”

Abdullah says he never anticipated that a rural hospital like SLMHC could provide such a multitude of services, which are typically only available in larger urban environments.

“Coming to a rural area, I never expected this hospital to offer so many services and programs. We provide a lot here for patients, and I think that’s amazing,” he says.
