SLMHC, SLMHC Foundation Celebrate Launch of MRI Services in Sioux Lookout

Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre (SLMHC) and the SLMHC Foundation are excited to announce that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans have officially begun at SLMHC, as of October 26, marking a historic milestone in bringing MRI services to Sioux Lookout and the surrounding region.
The launch of MRI services represents the culmination of years of planning, investment, collaboration, and community support. With the first scans now underway, patients in Sioux Lookout and surrounding First Nation communities can begin accessing this important diagnostic imaging service closer to home.
The new MRI service is expected to improve access to advanced diagnostic imaging for a patient catchment area of more than 30,000 people. Previously, patients requiring an MRI often needed to travel to Thunder Bay or Winnipeg, adding additional travel, time and logistical challenges to their care.
“This is an incredibly exciting day for SLMHC and for the communities we serve,” says Dean Osmond, SLMHC President and CEO. “Seeing our first MRI scans take place here in Sioux Lookout is the realization of a vision that has been years in the making. This service will make a meaningful difference for our patients by bringing essential diagnostic imaging closer to home and reducing the need for travel to other communities. We are incredibly grateful to the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Northern Development, our health care partners, and especially the generous donors who helped make this possible through the SLMHC Foundation.”
The SLMHC Foundation says the launch of MRI services is a significant milestone that reflects the generosity and commitment of donors, businesses, organizations, and communities across the region.
“This is a wonderful example of what can happen when a community comes together behind an important health care need. Every donation to the MRI campaign helped bring us closer to this day, and we are incredibly proud to see that investment now benefiting patients in our region,” says Rob McClendon, President of the SLMHC Foundation.
The commencement of MRI services follows the successful installation, commissioning, staff training, and operational preparation of the MRI system. The MRI suite was specifically designed to support the specialized technical, safety, workflow, and patient-care requirements associated with MRI services.
“Our team has put significant work into preparing for this day, from ensuring the equipment and environment were ready to supporting staff training and developing the workflows needed to provide safe, high-quality MRI services. It is incredibly rewarding to see all of that preparation come together as we welcome our first patients,” says Arianna Kitching, Diagnostic Imaging Manager at SLMHC.
MRI services will support the diagnosis and management of a wide range of medical conditions, giving health care providers timely access to advanced diagnostic imaging as part of their patients’ care. The launch of MRI services marks an important new chapter in health care delivery in Sioux Lookout and the north, helping bring advanced diagnostic services closer to the patients and communities who rely on SLMHC for care.
