Medical Laboratory Technician

Full Time Term (6 Months)

Department: Laboratory

Reports To: Manager of Laboratory and Diagnostic Imaging Services

Job Summary:

The Certified Medical Laboratory Technician must be knowledgeable in the theory, technique and clinical application of the various procedures performed and must be skilled in the performance of those procedures.  The Certified Medical Laboratory Assistant/Technician must conduct themselves in a professional manner in accordance with the Standards of Practice as described within the Medical Laboratory Professionals’ Association of Ontario (MLPAO) and the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS).

Qualifications:

  • MLPAO/CSMLS Diploma
  • Previous Work Experience in a Laboratory an Asset
  • Phlebotomy Experience an Asset
  • Course in Specimen Preparation and Handling And/Or Blood Procurement an Asset
  • TDG – Transportation of Dangerous Goods Knowledge an Asset
  • WHMIS
  • Proficient Keyboarding and Word Processing Skills
  • Ability to Deal with Public Effectively
  • Flexibility in Performing Job Duties
  • Excellent Communication Skills
  • Ability to Speak Oji-Cree an Asset
  • Current First Aid or CPR an Asset
  • Ability to work in a busy multidiscipline laboratory
Job Duties:

  • Sample preparation for analysis (labeling, accessioning, separation, centrifugation).
  • Cleans and disinfects laboratory work areas and centrifuges.
  • Maintains adequate laboratory inventory of supplies.
  • Clerical duties, such as filing, statistics, answering phones.
  • Packaging of Specimens for transport
  • Filing of records, retrieval of files, Referral Lab reports.
  • Perform all aspects of blood specimen procurement, including venous and capillary blood samples from adults, children and neonates
  • Sample preparation for analysis (labeling, accessioning, separation, centrifugation)
  • Planting and streaking of microbiology specimens and controls, including set up of anaerobic and CO2 jars, for reading by an MLT
  • Urinalysis (excluding microscopic)
  • Recording quality control results for interpretation and approval by an MLT.
  • Cleans and disinfects laboratory work areas and centrifuges.
  • Cleans and defrosts laboratory refrigerators and freezers.
  • Maintains adequate laboratory inventory of supplies
  • Clerical duties, such as filing, statistics, answering phones
  • Packaging of Specimens for transport
  • Temperature monitoring of thermally controlled equipment and work areas
  • Filing of records, retrieval of files, Referral Lab reports
  • Operation of automated instruments after proper functioning has been established by qualified staff
  • Sub-culturing of stock cultures
  • Set up of serology tests, e.g. pregnancy test (to be read and interpreted immediately by a MLT)
  • Routine equipment maintenance
  • Other duties as outlined in the job description
  • Must adhere to organizational policies and procedures concerning cleaning, hand hygiene and the use of Personal Protective Equipment in support of Infection Control measures and attend training when necessary
Salary:$31.45- $33.81; In accordance with CUPE Collective Agreement
